eReader eBook Reading Software   Download Reader

eReader software allows you to read secure (encrypted) eBooks on PalmOS, PocketPC, Windows, and Macintosh. The software is free and can be downloaded here. eReader software uses your credit card number as the "unlock code" to read your secure eBooks. NOTE: eReader files CANNOT be read on the Franklin eBookman.

Important Unlock Hint: The vast majority of eReader users who cannot "unlock" an eBook have trouble because they are not entering their name in EXACTLY as spelled and capitalized as when they purchased the eBook. To see the exact spelling, including which letters are capitalized, go to your the eReader.com bookshelf and see the drop down menu directly above the "Download eBook" button to the right of the eBook's title.

What are the hardware & software requirements to read eBooks in eReader format?

You need either a Palm OS or PocketPC/Windows CE Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) or Desktop eReader software for Windows or MAC.

Palm OS Hardware:

  • PDAs including: Palm III series, V series, VII series, m100 series, m125 series, m500 series; Handspring Visor series; TRG Pro; Sony CLIE; IBM WorkPad.
  • 134KB of free memory for the eReader application, plus sufficient free memory for each book (varies from 200KB to 2MB, depending upon the length of the book). NOTE for Palm Personal users. The Palm Personal will not work with the eReader. It doesn't have enough memory to handle all of our eBooks and there are some important technical differences in the Palm Personal's operating system that make it a less suitable platform for the eReader.

Palm OS Software:

  • Palm OS 3.0 or greater.
  • Synchronization software for downloading the eReader and eBooks to your Palm device (e.g., the Palm Desktop software)

PocketPC/Windows CE Hardware:

  • PDAs including: HP Jornada 420, 430, 430se, 540, 545, 547, 548, 680, 690, 720, and 820; Compaq iPAQ H3600 series, iPAQ H3100 series and Aero 1500 series; Casio Cassiopeia E115, E-125 and EM-500 series.
  • 167-260K of free memory for the eReader application, plus sufficient free memory for each book (varies from 200KB to 2MB, depending upon the length of the book).
  • 256KB free program space

PocketPC/Windows CE Software:

  • Windows CE 2.0 or greater
  • Synchronization software for downloading the eReader and eBooks to your PocketPC/Windows CE device (e.g., the ActiveSync® 3.1 software).

The eReader can also read Palm Doc files (.pdb). Many the eReader.com eBooks are available in unencrypted Palm Doc format (see MultiFormat eBooks). Every eBook at the eReader.com has its own eBook Description page which clearly states which formats that eBook is available in (see the "eBook Stats" part of the page).

Can I download and install an eBook from the eReader.com directly to my wireless PDA?   Top

No, you first need to download the eBook to your desktop PC and then sync it to your PDA.

How do I read books on Palm OS expansion cards?   Top

The eReader and eReader Pro for Palm OS support expansion cards that use the VFS Manager. This includes SD/MMC cards on Palm handhelds, MemoryStick cards on Sony handhelds, and both SD/MMC and CompactFlash cards on the Handera 330.

Books should be installed in the /PALM/Books or /PALM/Launcher directories on expansion cards.

You can use the eReader to copy books from main memory to the Books directory; select the "Copy" item from the "Book" menu in the Reader. Once the book has been copied to the card you can delete it from main memory.

You can install books directly in the Launcher directory during HotSync® using recent versions of the Palm Desktop software. In the Install tool click on the "Set Destination" button and set the destination to the card.

You can also install books directly on the card using a card reader attached to your desktop computer. Make sure to copy the books to the /PALM/Books directory.

If I change devices from a Palm OS handheld to a PocketPC handheld or vice versa, do I need to re-purchase my eBooks?   Top

No, the eReader.com's eReader eBooks are formatted as .pdb files and they work on both Palm OS handhelds and PocketPC/Windows CE devices.

If I lose my eBooks, will I be charged for another download?   Top

No, you can download your eBooks from your account as often as needed.

Credit Card Questions

How do I make a purchase with a different credit card number?   Top

the eReader.com allows you to have up to three active credit cards as an Unlock Code. When you purchase with a credit card, that card number is added to your three possible Unlock Codes. You can change these codes by going to your Bookshelf and clicking on the UPDATE MY PROFILE link on the left side.

Can I use something other than my credit card number to unlock my eBook in my PDA?   Top

No, only your credit card number along with your cardholder name (as it appears on your credit card) will unlock your eBook in your PDA. This is done to protect the publisher's copyright.

Is my name and credit card number stored on my PDA after I unlock an eBook?   Top

No. Your credit card number is used only to unlock the eBook and is not stored on your PDA. Your credit card number is not stored at the eReader.com either.

I received a message that my credit card could not be approved as my Unlock Code. What should I do?   Top

There are two possible scenarios that can cause this error message:

  1. When you entered a new credit card number to be an unlock code, it could not be validated by the company that handles our credit card processing. The card has to be active. Make sure you entered the card number, CVV2 code, and expiration date accurately. Also, make sure the address you have in the the eReader.com system is the same as the credit card billing address.
  2. Some international credit cards cannot be processed, in which case you may need to inquire with your card issuing bank.
