Explain why other ebooks may not work with the eReader software?

eReader is an application used to read eReader (or files with the extension .pdb) eBooks on your Palm OS, Pocket PC, Windows, Symbian, Windows Mobile Smartphone or Mac. Without eReader, you will not be able to read eReader eBooks, and other eBook Readers will not work with eReader.com eBooks. eReader.com eBooks are encrypted to protect the authors' work. In addition, the eReader can display styled text (italicized, underlined, etc.) and formatting as well as perform functions not found on other eBook readers. There is no charge to download and use eReader.

We never sell or distribute any personal information about our customers or visitors. We feel very strongly about privacy issues. Your personal information is stored securely and used for purchasing purposes only.

MY ACCOUNT:
How do I open an account?

Click here to open an account. The directions will walk you through the process.

How do I access my eReader.com account?

Throughout the site, you can select the link at the top of the page called "Account" (right by the shopping cart on top). Once you are signed inb you can use this link to access your account.

To sign in as a Returning Customer, use the email address and password you used when you first created the account. Or, if you had made updates to the original values, then use the newer values instead.

You can sign in from any computer, e.g., from home or from work. Just remember to use the email address and password from your eReader.com account; you don't have to use the email address assigned to the computer you are using.

Credit Card Questions
How do I make a purchase with a different credit card number?

To make a purchase with a different credit card number, you first need to log into your account, edit your credit card information and then save the changes. Afterwards, you can continue your eBook shopping and purchasing with your new credit card number.

What are the instructions on editing your credit card information?

Once a card is in our system, it cannot be modified for security and integrity purposes. Any changes will require you to create a new card, even if it has the same number.

Can I use something other than my credit card number to unlock my eBook in my handheld or computer?

No, only your credit card number along with your cardholder name (as it appears on your credit card) will unlock your eBook in your handheld. This is done to protect the publisher's copyright. Your credit card number is not stored on the device and is only used to unlock your eBook.

Is my name and credit card number stored on my handheld or computer after I unlock an eBook?

No. Your credit card number is used only to unlock the eBook and is not stored on your handheld.

I received a message that my credit card could not be approved for my purchase. What should I do?

There are two possible scenarios that can cause this error message:

When you created your account, you may have entered your name, credit card number, credit card type and/or expiration date incorrectly in the credit card field. If either is not exactly entered as it appears on your card, your transaction will be rejected. To ensure your information was entered accurately, log into your account and verify all of your credit card information. Then try to repeat your purchase. If you continue to get the same error message, you may need to contact your card issuing bank.

Some international credit cards cannot be processed, in which case you may need to inquire with your card-issuing bank.

One-time-use credit cards are currently not accepted.

What is your refund policy?

All eBook sales are final. Extreme situations will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

OUR STORE:
How often are new eBooks added?

We add several hundred titles to our store every month and usually release the titles on the same day as the print pub date. To see our latest titles, go to the New Release section which is updated daily.

How are eReader.com eBooks priced?

Our eBooks are typically priced less than or equal to the list price of their paper counterparts. Our eBook prices are also less than online prices of their paper counterparts, when you consider shipping costs. We "buy" books from the publisher, just like your local bookstore does, and we add to that the cost of developing our technology and running our web site.

The only cost to you is the purchase price of your eBook. Once purchased, you can download your eBook as often as needed at no charge. There is no charge for using the free eReader software.

After adding a book to your shopping cart, you'll see a field in the upper right area labeled "Promo Code." Enter the special code—KITTEN in this example—and select the "Update Cart" button. A message will appear confirming that your Promo Code has been accepted and that the appropriate discount amount has been applied to the eligible item(s).

If the code you enter is invalid (wrong or expired code), a message box will alert you. Please review your newsletter to make sure you are using a valid Promo Code that has not yet expired.

What foreign sites offer eReader eBooks?
FREE READER PRO SOFTWARE:
What is eReader Pro? Why do I need it? Can I use a different Reader?

eReader Pro is an application used to read eReader.com eBooks on your Palm OS, Pocket PC, Symbian Smartphone, Windows, Windows Mobile Smartphone or Mac. Without eReader Pro, you will not be able to read eReader.com eBooks, and other eBook Readers will not work with eReader.com eBooks. eReader.com eBooks are encrypted to protect the authors' work. Can I read non-eReader.com files or PC files with the eReader?

The eReader can read doc files. A doc file is a type of handheld file that ends in either .pdb or .prc. These text files have been specifically packaged for use on a handheld. Doc format is pretty much a standard for HANDHELD documents, and the latest version of the eReader can view them.

Can I have more than one eBook at a time in the eReader?

Yes, as long as you have enough memory on your handheld to hold all your eBooks in the eReader. What can reduce the speed and performance of the eReader?

We've had a few reports of eReader being slow on some machines. In those cases, the slowness was due to the presence of certain HackMaster software. The most common of these was "TealEcho" which, like a lot of similar software, is always running in the background and can seriously degrade the performance of the entire machine. Removing this should dramatically speed up eReader.

Older versions of the Reader may experience difficulty with memory allocation in some circumstances, usually on older hardware. One workaround is to perform a reset in order to defragment the dynamic memory heap. Another is to disable any hacks that may be using dynamic memory. Note that this dynamic memory is not the same as that used to store applications, books and other data, so you may have a lot of "free memory" showing in the Launcher but still encounter memory problems when trying to run the Reader.

If I erase my eBook from the eReader, will I be able to read it again at a later time?

Yes, as long as you keep a copy on your desktop machine, you can reload it on your handheld as often as you wish. When you reload it, you will need to enter your user name and unlock code. If you lose or accidentally delete your copy, you can re-download it from Your Account. For the first time, it's now possible to build up your own library of your favorite books that won't ever age or deteriorate!

Can the eReader display foreign characters?

Yes, eReader supports the Latin 1 character set which supports most Western European Languages. These include French, German, Italian, and Spanish. You can purchase foreign books in German and French.

How do I categorize books installed on my Palm OS handheld?

Launch the eReader application from the application screen on the Palm OS® handheld.
Tap the Menu icon in the Graffiti® area.
>From the Book menu, select Info.

On the Book Info screen from the Category drop down menu, select the category of your choice.

Tap Ok.

How do I download and access previously purchased eBooks?

As long as you keep a copy on your desktop machine, you can reload it on your handheld as often as you wish. When you reload it, you will need to enter your user name and unlock code. If you lose or accidentally delete your copy, you can re-download it from Your Account. For the first time, it's now possible to build up your own library of your favorite books that won't ever age or deteriorate!

Can I download an eBook directly to my handheld or Symbian device?

At the present time, only Windows Mobile users can download eBooks directly to their devices. To learn more about this, click here. We are working hard to bring the same advancements to the other devices. However, currently you need a computer to download the files and sync them to your device.

How do I read eBooks on Palm OS expansion cards?

The eReader and eReader Pro for Palm OS support expansion cards that use the VFS Manager. This includes SD/MMC cards on Palm handhelds, MemoryStick cards on Sony handhelds, and both SD/MMC and CompactFlash cards on the Handera 330.

Books should be installed in the /PALM/Books or /PALM/Launcher directories on expansion cards.

You can use the eReader to copy books from main memory to the Books directory; select the "Copy" item from the "Book" menu in the Reader. Once the book has been copied to the card you can delete it from main memory.

You can install books directly in the Launcher directory during HotSync® using recent versions of the Palm Desktop software. In the Install tool click on the "Set Destination" button and set the destination to the card.

You can also install books directly on the card using a card reader attached to your desktop computer. Make sure to copy the books to the /PALM/Books directory.

Do I need to purchase an additional copy of eReader Pro for my Pocket PC, my Windows XP Desktop System, etc?

We require that eReader Pro must be purchased for each platform that is used on. We did this to defray the cost of the Reader on each individual platform. Most versions of eReader Pro are $4.95, while the Windows Mobile version is free.

    eReader Pro FAQ
Why can't I turn the pages of my eBook in library view using the mousewheel?

A mouse that supports universal scrolling can interfere with page turning when using the mousewheel. We suggest one of the following:

    1. Toggle the view to open the book in its own window, mousewheel page turning will then work properly.
    2. As an alternative to the mousewheel, you can enable page turning using mouseclicks within the page. To enable this feature, please see the reader preferences (shortcut key ctrl+G).
    3. Disable universal scrolling on your mouse for eReader. To do this go to the Start Menu->ControlPanel->Mouse->Wheel. To the right of "Enable Universal Scrolling", click on the "Exceptions..." button and select "Add". You will be prompted for an application name and path. Simply enter "eReader" and provide the path to the directory eReader was installed on your desktop.
How do I read books on Palm OS expansion cards?

In the Install tool click on the "Change Destination" or "Set Destination" button and set the destination to the card.

You can also install books directly on the card using a card reader attached to your desktop computer. Make sure to copy the books to the /PALM/Books directory.

eReader Pro Fonts and Dictionary Instructions on Palm Devices

Installing the fonts and dictionary for your new eReader Pro is as easy as installing a book. In fact, installing a dictionary is exactly like installing a book and installing fonts just adds a few extra steps to the process.

The Agfa Monotype Font Pack for eReader Pro is downloaded as a standard Zip file. Make sure that you note which directory you save the Zip file to and then follow these simple instructions:

Important Note: For most users, the 9 and 12 point sizes are sufficient for normal usage. You may want to install the 18 point size if you use the Large system font frequently. Clie and HandEra users will probably want to install the 18 and the 24 point fonts instead of the smaller sizes. Because of the increased resolution of these devices, the 18 point fonts will produce the same results that a 9 point font will on other handhelds and the 24 point fonts will be equal to a 12 point font.

To install your eReader Pro Fonts:
    1. Unzip the file using your WinZip application (Windows) or StuffIt Expander (Mac).
    2. Open the Palm Desktop application. On the left-hand side of the application window you will see "Install." Click on "Install."
    3. Click on "Add".
    4. Be sure that you are installing the Fonts to main memory and not a memory card.
    5. Navigate to the directory where your fonts are located and double click on the fonts that you want to install.
    6. Click "Done". You should see a dialog box informing you that your programs will be installed the next time you perform a HotSync operation.
To install your Webster's New World Vest Pocket Dictionary:
    1. Open the Palm Desktop application. On the left-hand side of the application window you will see "Install." Click on "Install."
    2. Click Add.
    3. Navigate to the directory where your dictionary is located and double click on the "Pocket Dictionary.pdb" file.
    4. Click "Done". You should see a dialog box informing you that your programs will be installed the next time you HotSync.

OTA stands for Over the Air. The new version of eReader Pro for Windows Mobile is equipped with OTA technology. This allows you to browse, purchase, and then download books directly to your device. This means you no longer have to connect to your computer to shop for new eBooks

At the present time only Pocket PCs and Smartphones running Windows Mobile 2003 or later support eReader OTA shopping. We are working hard to bring the same advancements to other platforms in the future.

If you.d like to take a look at the catalog or perform searches to see what titles are available at eReader.com, you only need a supported device with a network connection and the latest version of the eReader client. To get the latest version of eReader Pro go to this page, choose your device, and click download. To purchase books it is required that you already have an account setup with eReader.com, including a credit card on file. If you would like to set up an account, you can do so by logging in here on your computer. After you set up an account, download the appropriate version of eReader Pro for your device.

Books are stored in the 'My Documents\Peanut Press' folder off of the root directory of the device or storage card chosen for the file download. This folder is created for you if it doesn.t exist when the book download begins.

I've purchased a book, but when I try to download it I get a "Response from Server Timed Out" error.

Some books can be quite large and depending on the speed of your network connection it can take an inordinate amount of time to complete the download. I am trying to install/hot sync my eBooks. I receive the message that the files do not exist? I purchased the eBook. What is wrong?

This error relates to a bug with the Palm install/hotsync software. If the path or directory of the file you are trying to install is too long the install software will not be able to find the file. The solution is to unzip or move the files directly to your desktop or into a folder with a shorter path such as c:\temp. This will keep the path length smaller, and allow the Palm Install software to "see" the files. You may also want to download and install the latest Palm hotsync software.

No, you can download your eBooks from your account as often as needed. For more information about downloading your eBooks from your account, go to Accessing, Downloading, and Unzipping.

Why doesn't Global Find find text in my eBooks?

Searching through the text of every book loaded on your handheld would take a long time. Global Find will find text in any annotations or bookmarks you've made. For finding text, use the Find command in the eReader.

When will my favorite books be available?

Soon, we hope. We are working with many publishers to bring their books to press. To request a title, please contact us and select "title requests", or send your request directly to eReader.com. Please note that we receive dozens of requests every day and will not be able to answer every customer's e-mail. However, we are keeping a list of every single title request and communicate these preferences to the publisher directly.

Why are you promoting this particular author, book, and genre?

The views and opinions expressed in materials appearing at eReader.com are strictly those of the authors and do not necessarily state or reflect those of eReader.com or its parent company Fictionwise. eReader.com does not endorse any political or religious position or activity identified in its Web site, e-mail marketing campaigns nor through its agreements with hosted organizations.

Do I need to purchase another eReader Pro for my Pocket PC, or my Windows XP Desktop System?

We require that eReader Pro must be purchased for each platform that is used on. We did this to defray the cost of the Reader on each individual platform. For example, instead of charging $80 for a eReader Pro that runs on Palm OS, Pocket PC, Mac, and PC, we decided to charge $20 for each copy since most people only want to use the Reader on one platform.

When you use your credit card to purchase from eReader.com, the credit card company automatically converts the charge into US currency.

A wireless handheld version of ithe eReader client is now available for Windows Mobile users. Click here to go to download the newest version of eReader Pro to take advantage of the ability to browse, purchase, and download eBooks directrly from your device. We are looking into this possibility for other devices.

I was wondering how long it takes for a book that was previously released in hardback to reflect a price change once it is released in paperback?

Generally, the publishers do tell us when a book is scheduled to be downpriced. Obviously we try to downprice the books as soon as we can but with over 14,000 titles, some books do slip through the cracks. Plus we need the publisher's permission before we can downprice on the site.

Why have you suspended the coming soon section?

We are currently working to implementing a Coming Soon section to eReader.com. Stay tuned.

Some of my favorite authors do not appear or are published with big delays. Why?

We do try our hardest to get these titles to our customers on pub date. In some cases, publishers do not intend the eBook to be released as the same date of as the print version.
