The first Interracial romance has Ramona falling in love with a Native American in Old California. In writing it, Helen Hunt Jackson hoped to bring the wrongs done to the Native American to the public consciousness in the same way that Uncle Tom's Cabin brought public awareness of the evils of slavery.
