Karen is used to taking care of the unpleasant jobs no one else wants to deal with. When a shortage of funds forces her to fire fifteen employees, she isn't happy, but the job must be done. Or it would, if only she could track down Ivy Bedinghaus, a night clerk she has never met. When she finally does confront Ivy, she is thrust into a conflict centuries old, that make her previous troubles pale in comparison.
